Read to ME

The Read to ME program strives to make a strong and positive connection with books and to cultivate confident learners with basic reading skills that will follow them as they continue to grow and learn.

Research shows that the most significant factor for a child’s educational success is being read to prior to beginning school–about 1000 hours of reading time!

Member volunteers focus on enhancing the pre-reading skills of preschool children, specifically those who come from disadvantaged situations. Our Reading Grandparents provide approximately 100 hours per month of one-on-one and small group reading activities for children attending the five Early Learning Centers operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

In addition to reading with children, Read to ME distributes a book (or two!) to every child every month to take home and enjoy with their families. Research shows that the availability of age-appropriate books nearly triples a child’s interest in reading. Sadly, more than half of low-income families have no children’s books in their homes. Each year we distribute over 5000 books.

According to the Read to ME Chair, “The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to prior to beginning school.”
