Reading stimulates\u00a0children and forms their view of the world.\u00a0Through Operation Literacy, we hope to make an impact by making children\u2019s\u00a0books available to children in lower income homes. The focus of the\u00a0campaign is children ages 1- 12 but we also collect and distribute books for teenagers up to age 16.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Sad Facts<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>61% of lower income families have no children\u2019s books in the home.<\/li>\n<li>This lack of books puts children at a disadvantage, because 75% of students who\u00a0are poor readers in third grade\u00a0remain poor readers in high school.<\/li>\n<li>The average number of books for this population is one book per 300 children,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>Assistance League member volunteers participate by donating money, purchasing books at thrift stores and the\u00a0American University Women\u2019s Book Sale, sorting donated books and packing them for distribution.
