{"id":7719,"date":"2021-12-17T05:27:52","date_gmt":"2021-12-17T13:27:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.assistanceleague.org\/bend\/?p=7719"},"modified":"2022-03-02T13:10:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T21:10:27","slug":"holiday-gifts-for-low-income-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.assistanceleague.org\/bend\/2021\/12\/17\/holiday-gifts-for-low-income-seniors\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Gifts for Low-income Seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Perhaps no one outgrows \u201cstockings hung by the chimney with care\u201d and \u201cvisions of sugar-plums dancing in their heads.\u201d Assistance League<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> of Bend volunteers ensure that the holiday wishes of local seniors are fulfilled through their annual Secret Santa program.<\/p>\n<p>Seniors at 17 long-term care facilities in Bend, La Pine, Redmond and Sisters will receive special holiday gifts, handpicked for them by their Secret Santa. Facility representatives speak with residents and obtain personalized gift requests, including size, color and interests. Many of the requests are touchingly simple \u2014 a plump pillow, a cozy blanket, warm socks in a favorite color, towels and underclothes. Others reflect long-held interests such as a book on military history, crossword puzzle books, love of animals \u2014 or a sweet tooth \u2014 chocolates and caramel corn. The volunteers enjoy hunting for the perfect gifts to brighten the holidays for the often-forgotten seniors. With the pandemic, some items, like sweat shirts and sweat pants, were hard to find last year as the country hunkered down at home. One volunteer shopper shared that \u201cEven Amazon was out of all but a few small sizes in neon colors.
