At the start of National Volunteer Month, Assistance League of Northern Virginia recognized ALL member volunteers who have had such a profound impact on students and families in their community since founding as a guild in 1999 and as a chapter in 2004. Everyone is encouraged to choose a cause and volunteer! Feel the empowerment of knowing you’re making a difference in people’s lives.

The chapter’s programs have evolved over the past 22 years, but the caring and commitment of members has remained steadfast. Currently, through the philanthropic programs they provide: nonperishable food to students; new clothing and toiletries, literacy support through individualized tutoring and the donation of new books; Hugs pillows to comfort young children who need help coping; and Baby/Layette Bundles that contain hand-made baby blankets and hats, onesies, and other items for new mothers. Despite the chapter’s small size and limited budget, they’ve touched the lives of more than 8000 students and families in recent years, and managed to continue providing essential help during the pandemic. The ripple effects from 2 decades of helping the most vulnerable is incalculable.

We’re quite impressed since we were still under some Covid 19 guidelines.

In June the outgoing Board and Program and Committee chairpersons shared their gained knowledge, data, accomplishments, and experiences about their positions with the Incoming Board members and Program and Committee chairpersons. It was an invaluable and beneficial exchange of information during a garden luncheon at the lovely home of one of the Board members.

In July a kick-off picnic cleverly advertised as “Antsy to See You” was held at a beautiful park for all members. The weather was perfect, the venue ideal, the ice breaker was clever, the lunch delicious and the gift baskets for bingo prizes were well worth winning! In addition, our first “Dining for Dollars” fundraiser was held. Members were so enthusiastic to get out and visit with their friends that this fundraiser brought in much more money than previous ones!

August was a very active month with many achievements. The first regular membership meeting of 2021-22 was held. Members were given the options of attending the meeting in person, going on Zoom, or reading the minutes if unable to take advantage of either of the other two first options. Volunteers supervised a petting zoo at Family Supportive Housing, a homeless shelter.

Over 300 baby layettes, handmade by our Caring Hands program, were donated to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Topics and presenters were confirmed for our monthly “Learning with the League” series. Well over 100 toiletry bags were delivered to various homeless shelters. At another shelter for young women and their children, diapers, quilts, and baby layettes were provided. And Operation School Bell got underway with the delivery of school uniforms to schools in three different school districts.

In the coming months more of the Assistance League of San Jose philanthropic programs will get underway. With pandemic restrictions still in place, new delivery systems have had to be devised. What remains the same is that our members are committed, ready and eager to be out serving the community again.

Carol Kovak was celebrated by Assistance League of Sierra Foothills members for her leadership and kindness.

Assistance League Sierra Foothills held its first Zoom meeting of the year Jan. 27, during which Carol Kovak, a well-deserving member who has held several leadership positions in the organization, was awarded the Anne Banning Leadership Award for her exemplary contributions.
The Anne Banning Leadership Award is named for Anne Banning, founder of Assistance League.

he award demonstrates the importance of leadership to the chapter and communicates the accomplishments and dedication of the recipient.

The first to congratulate the recipient was current President Vera Doettling, who praised Kovak’s skills as an efficient, innovative, inclusive and superior teacher.

Other members spoke of Kovak’s professionalism, ability to lead by example and quickness to do whatever is asked of her. Her kindness in being a mentor to many and always being available to answer questions and give advice were other examples given of her leadership skills.

With the pending reopening of schools on the hybrid model, Assistance League of Chaves County anticipates an increase in referrals from area schools that have children in need of new clothes appropriate for their classrooms. Operation School Bell has remained well stocked with new clothing, hygiene kits, shoe vouchers, socks, underwear and books for children in grades kindergarten through eighth since the 2020 school year began virtually in August.

According to a press release from the organization, Assistance League appreciates the generous support of many benefactors.

“Financial donors, contributors of items to resell at our Assistance League Thrift Shop, and school personnel referring families in need of our services all help us provide for children in need prepare to succeed in school,” Jean Maley, of the Assistance League of Chaves County, said in an email.

“All students referred to us receive all their items just as in the past,” she said. “But due to COVID-19 and the safety of not only our member volunteers but also our children we serve, we approach dressing a little differently this year. Through specially designed Fitter Forms, we attempt to dress children by assembling their items ahead of time and having the families come by the Assistance League chapter house simply to pick up their filled bags at appointed times.”

Assistance League of Boise is celebrating 40 years of service to Ada County and recently Canyon County. To mark the occasion, Gov. Brad Little and Garden City Mayor John Evans issued proclamations acknowledging their commitment and service to the community.

Since its inception, Assistance League of Boise has provided new school clothes to more than 72,000 children through Operation School Bell® — the Assistance League flagship philanthropy — and served over 277,000 children in combined philanthropic efforts. Its volunteers have served over one million hours at a value of almost $20 million.

“The lives of Idahoans have been greatly improved by the gracious and charitable acts of Assistance League,” Gov. Brad Little said in a statement. “While it is easy to give our time and resources during times of ease, it is even more important to maintain that charity during times of hardship. Over the past 40 years, Assistance League has commendably maintained their philanthropic programs to better the lives of Ada County residents. Congratulations and happy anniversary!”

Assistance League of Boise is one of 120 chapters of National Assistance League with a mission to transform lives and strengthen communities. Started as Assistance Guild of Boise in 1976, then chartered with chapter status in 1980, Assistance League has grown to meet community needs, currently supporting nine philanthropies for underserved youth in our community. Sales from their Thrift Shop, located at 5825 N. Glenwood Street in Garden City, provides 80% of the revenues to support their philanthropies.

Kathy Palmrose, President of Assistance League of Boise, said, “Our 40th anniversary marks a significant milestone in our history, and we would like to thank our volunteers, our customers, our donors and community partners for their trust, loyalty and support of our vision and goals in this community.”
