EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – Although the back-to-school shopping frenzy may not be as big mid-semester as it is at the beginning of the school year, many students are still in need of new clothes — but may not be able to afford them.
Run by the Assistance League of El Paso, Operation School Bell® provides clothing for El Paso County children in need.
The students, who are chosen by school administrators, receive three pairs of pants, three shirts, one jacket, a hygiene kit, underwear, and socks.
“They are so excited to be here,” Corina Ortega, the counselor of James P. Butler Elementary School, tells KTSM. “…they are amazed at all the goodies they get..their uniforms, their socks, their shoes, so their reaction is just that of excitement.”
Volunteers say the program also helps with the students’ self esteem at school.
“Often times, the shoes they have on are two sizes smaller than the ones we put on them and they say, ‘Oh that feels good’ and they are always excited to get the new shoes and pants,” Mary Anna Benson says.
The clothes are bought in bulk with the money made from the league’s thrift store. Click HERE for donation information.
