Greater Placer – Fashions on a Budget

greater placerMembers of Assistance League of Greater Placer have been highlighting women’s clothing, available in their thrift shop in Auburn, by providing fashion shows, since 2006.

As an Assistance League member, I came up with the novel idea and set up the first fashion show. I thought, “Why not go out to the public, with the great clothes in our thrift shop?” The excellent clothing, at affordable prices, was  a hit when presented to people enrolled at Weight Watchers. Those watching the show realized they could look classy as they transitioned with their weight loss, without the high cost of new clothes. The program was extended to other Weight Watcher groups and then to teachers and other school personnel. They found they could dress nicely with very little investment. The shows, entertaining and resourceful, were soon being performed for church groups, clubs, and other ladies’ groups. The name, “Fashions on a Budget” was born.

greater placer 2Beginning in 2010, Assistance League has hosted a fundraiser called “Fall Tea and Fashions on a Budget.” Each year, in October, the event attracts 400 ladies who, for a few hours, enjoy delicious food and wonderful company, while they watch a fabulous fashion show. Guests dress trendy, with some wearing fashionable hats displaying flowers, feathers, and lace. Everyone admires the forty uniquely set tables before enjoying a traditional afternoon tea, served by Assistance League members.

The fashion shows have helped call attention to the high-end Assistance League Thrift shop, which has, in the Auburn Journal’s annual survey, been voted “Best of the Best” several years.

greater placer 3Our most recent “Fashion on a Budget” show was held in September 2015 at Lincoln United Methodist Church, 629 “I” Street, Lincoln, CA 95648. Our member fashion models take some time to pose for the camera after showcasing beautiful clothes from our Thrift Shop.
