Houston – Celebrates Legacy of Literacy with Head Start

Families with children gathered to celebrate the Legacy of Literacy Day on Saturday morning in the northeast Houston neighborhood of Denver Harbor.

At the Head Start literacy event, which was open to the public, children played games, won prizes, completed arts and crafts, had their faces painted and chose books to take home after listening to story-time reading sessions.

“We have hundreds of books to give away to help increase literacy in the community and give children access to home libraries,” said Venetia Peacock, senior director of Harris County Department of Education’s Head Start. “We know that when children have books in their homes and more access to books, then they are more likely to read or be read to.”

Peacock said the event also aimed to recruit families in the community, as Head Start is currently taking applications for the 2018-2019 school year.
