Pueblo – Benefits from Women’s League

All year long, the 100-plus members of the Pueblo West Women’s League raises funds in order to give to Pueblo West and regional programs and organizations.

This week, the group recognized its 2019 recipients of over $12,000 in funds.

The Pueblo West Women’s League approved its annual collection of financial gifts, spanning 24 organizations and a total of 28 gifts in all. Gifts range from $100 to $2,800, that amount being given to Pueblo West Parks and Recreation for its annual Halloween trick-or-treat event and its Holiday Basket program for local needy families.

A committee of 10 Women’s League members deliberated numerous funding requests from organizations and initiatives far and wide. Pueblo West Women’s League members Denise Chambers said the priority is to give to Pueblo West organizations.

“Our committee uses an objective rubric to decide on every funding request,” Chambers said, “and requests that benefit Pueblo West are given the highest priority.”

Chambers added that there are many organizations that are in Pueblo but also serve the Pueblo West community who receive funding too. Donations are broken down into several categories, including youth programs, educational programs, community programs and animal programs.

The funds come from the Women’s League’s chief fundraisers, which includes its Christmas House Boutique each November, its springtime “Game Nigh” and its Women’s Tea, which takes place each summer.

A percentage of funds raised during the year goes to the Pueblo West Women’s League’s Let’s stART program, which has installed six sculptures in public spaces across Pueblo West.

Each January and February, the Women’s League requests that community organizations request funding.

This year’s beneficiaries include – Assistance League of Pueblo, the Baylon Meyer Memorial Scholarship fund, Bella Prima Musica, CASA, Desert Sage Elementary, the Pueblo West Library, the Pueblo West Swim Club, the Tom Sawyer Fishing Derby, Prairie Winds Elementary School, Pueblo Christian Academy, Pueblo West High School, Sangre de Cristo Arts Center, Swallows Charter Academy, Soaring Eagles Center for Autism, A Caring Pregnancy Center, Ecumenical Church of Pueblo West, Majestic Baptist Church, Paradise Memorial Garden, Pueblo West Chamber of Commerce, Pueblo West Parks and Rec, Spark the Change, AWR Cat Tails Rescue, PAWS for Life, Pueblo Zoo and Rocky Mountain Collie/Sheltie.

“The most exciting part of this is that Women’s League members can see their hard work in action,” Chambers said. “To see (organizations) get those checks, it gives the incentive for all of our fundraising.”
