Student members of the Rochester High School (RHS) Key Club donated $300 to the Assault Survivor Kits® program, provided by Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, to support survivors of sexual abuse and assault.
Jennifer O’Toole-Seyka, RHS counselor and Key Club advisor, shared information with students about Assistance League’s program that provides fresh clothes and personal items to survivors of assault-an immediate need that comes at a difficult time. “The students decided they wanted to be a part of this program that brings some comfort and dignity to the survivors,” O’Toole-Seyka said. “Key Club’s mission is to encourage students to volunteer where needed in the Rochester area and connect them to the community in which they live in a meaningful way.”
Last year, Assistance League provided 1,100 kits-free of charge-to 44 trauma centers throughout Michigan for abused and sexually assaulted survivors. The Assault Survivor Kits contain new clothing, including a comfortable top, pants, underwear, socks, toiletries, and a stuffed animal for children. Unfortunately, clothing is often retained by police as evidence, and without the kindness of Assistance League, some survivors would be forced to wear hospital scrubs home.
At the start of each school year, approximately 50 Rochester High School students join Key Club and pay $15 membership dues. The students decide what projects and community programs they wish to support with their funds. Last year they donated to Leader Dogs for the Blind. This year, Key Club members made donations to Assistance League’s Assault Survivor Kits and a teen program at Neighborhood House. Students also volunteer at the OPC (Older Persons’ Commission), Rochester Heritage Days festival and they provide free tutoring services.
