{"id":5303,"date":"2020-02-20T12:18:16","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T17:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.assistanceleague.org\/chesapeake\/?p=5303"},"modified":"2020-02-20T12:18:16","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T17:18:16","slug":"going-the-distance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.assistanceleague.org\/chesapeake\/2020\/02\/20\/going-the-distance\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Going the Distance&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To honor Black History Month, Assistance League of the Chesapeake sponsored a performance of \u201cGoing the Distance\u201d by the <a href=\"https:\/\/discoverytheater.org\/touring-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smithsonian Discovery Theater.<\/a> The performance was held on February 14, 2020, at Georgetown East Elementary School in Annapolis, Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>We received the funds for the performance through a grant award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acaac.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arts Council of Anne Arundel County<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing the Distance\u201d tells the story of Jesse Owens and Wilma Rudolph, two Olympians who changed history. The shows offered a vivid portrayal of their lives as they overcome childhood illness, infirmity and poverty to become the world\u2019s fastest woman and man, winning the highest honor in athletics: an Olympic gold medal.
