The Weekend Food Pantry was implemented several years ago to help alleviate the major issue of childhood hunger. The goal to provide supplemental food during the school year to low income students and their families so children will have food over the weekend. Schools were identified that had at least 75% of their children receiving free or reduced lunches .

The Food Pantry consists of either a backpack program or a food pantry. Backpack programs are filled each week by ALE members and the food pantries allow families to “shop ” for the food items they will need. Food consists of staple items as well as some fresh vegetables and fruits. There are currently five schools participating and additional schools are added as budget allows. In 2017-2018, the Weekend Food Pantry provided food for over 3700 students.
