Helping students at local Community Colleges<\/h2>\n

Assistance League of Greater Wilmington launched the Operation Scholar Support program in the Fall of 2015 to benefit students at Brunswick Community College (Brunswick County) and Cape Fear Community College (New Hanover County). In 2022, we created a scholarship for students, who are planning to become teachers and are attending the Watson College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington.<\/h4>\n

Our Scholarships at work!<\/strong><\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/6″][vc_single_image image=”8275″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_column_text]Michael King, an ALGW scholarship recipient from Cape Fear Community College, stopped by the Thrift Shop on May 17 to show his acceptance letter from Columbia University to Nancy Fiedler and Marsha Olender, incoming and current ALGW presidents.\u00a0 Michael is very appreciative of the support of his ALGW scholarship in taking him from community college to the Ivy League.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/3″][vc_single_image image=”8271″ img_size=”medium” style=”vc_box_outline” border_color=”black”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/6″][vc_single_image image=”8275″ img_size=”full”][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”custom” border_width=”4″ accent_color=”#2c49a0″][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Operation Scholar Support was started by Assistance League of Greater Wilmington in 2015 to provide scholarships for underserved students who attend Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College.\u00a0 The criteria for scholarships are maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.5, be a second-year student with documented financial need, be a resident of New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender counties, and preferably be a student who is returning to school to obtain skills and employability.\u00a0 In 2022, we started a scholarship at the College of Education at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for students who want to become teachers.<\/p>\n

To date, each community college has received $105,500 and University of North Carolina Wilmington received $10,000 from our local chapter.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]Our chapter has reached the benefactor level of giving for Brunswick Community College and was inducted into the McKeithan Society by Cape Fear Community College this past February. The McKeithan Society is a recognition given to those whose cumulative giving to CFCC has exceeded $50,000.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”6917″ img_size=”medium” style=”vc_box_outline” border_color=”black”][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_column_text]Nancy Scott-Finan accepts the McKeithan Society Award on behalf of our chapter.
