Assistance League of Hawaii Featured on Elevate 808 Premiere

Assistance League of Hawaii was highlighted on the premiere episode of Elevate 808, a new weekly TV show that premiered on KHON TV this past Sunday, June 8th. Hosted by show producer Nolan Hong, Elevate 808 is a summer series focusing on uplifting stories featuring local non-profits and small businesses in Hawaii.

The program segment, filmed at Assistance League of Hawaii’s Thrift Shop and at an Operation Wildlife (OWL) presentation at Palisades Elementary School, showcased the organization’s mission of giving back to the community, especially underserved children.

Run entirely by volunteers, with over 100 members, Assistance League of Hawaii is always looking for more volunteers and donations.

Gear Up to Donate and Participate in the Annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk

May 3rd is around the corner for this year’s Visitor Industry Charity Walk, which is sponsored by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association. Share the camaraderie, exercise and wonderful food at this year’s annual fundraiser. Assistance League receives back the donations and more from this event. Last year 2024, Assistance League of Hawaii received $4,000.

Free lunch is provided by Kyo-ya Ohana at the end of the walk, along with free snacks and drinks that are available along the route. It is a 5.2 mile route from Magic Island through Waikiki.

Assistance League’s team this year will include the youth group from “On Time R.E.A.C.H.” Mahalo to Lorna Motas who is coordinating the sponsored walkers.

R.E.A.C.H. represents the “process” that youth will go through

Revive – Revive you to get excited for living life with purpose

Equip – Equip you with the tools to succeed and develop your character

Activate – Activate your gifts & talents to apply what you have learned

Community – Restoration of community and family through serving & giving back

Hope – To give hope for positive change and strive to continue reaching the community

The deadline to get your check to Assistance League of Hawaii is April 30th. You can also donate online to the links provided below.

If you choose to walk and haven’t registered by the deadline, you can register on May 3rd at the Charity Walk. Assistance League of Hawaii members and walkers will meet at 6:30 am at Magic Island.

$50 suggested donation for anyone over 18
$25 suggested donation for anyone under 18

Program Description

Mary Monohon & Gloria McGehee-Koel, from the Assistance League of Hawaii, inspire us with their volunteer work to help to better the lives of children. The non-profit organization has been helping the community for over 50 years. The Assistance League of Hawaii is able to fund their programs through the money they make at their owned and operated thrift store. Mary and Gloria highlight Operation School Bell, a program that raises money to give children in need money to buy new school clothing. Gloria is inspired by the diverse group of volunteers at the Assistance League of Hawaii. Mary is inspired by the volunteers’ service-oriented hearts and the satisfaction of helping others through hard work.

The 2023 Community Newsletter from Assistance League of Hawaii is now online. This promotional piece is sent to all schools we work with as well as recent donors, vendors and companies that have helped us in the past. Take a look at the great things we accomplished last year. Please note on the front page where it says “Spending Money.” We put 74% of all money earned back into our programs, which is a major accomplishment for non profits such as ours.

BYU-Hawaii Museum of Natural History Donates Biofacts to Assistance League of Hawaii

Three Operation Wildlife (OWL) member volunteers, Betty Parinas, Linda Andersen, and Hazel Sumile took a road trip out to Brigham Young University-Hawaii Campus on the North Shore community of Laie to visit the BYU-Hawaii Museum of Natural History. They met with the museum’s curator, Dr. Phillip Bruner, and obtained a few “gifts” from the school, which is dismantling its museum and the collection this summer.

The ladies were fascinated by the displays of all the “real” animals (the huge polar bear, brown bear, moose, small animals, birds and more) that have been taxidermied by various people and students, as well as by the Dr. Bruner himself. Betty Parinas was surprised by how many of the animals she had known back in the old OWL Zoo days.

Assistance League of Hawaii was gifted with two turtles that are in great condition, as well as a boxful of furs, feet, and other “stuff”! We sincerely thanked Dr. Bruner and his staff for providing Assistance League of Hawaii with such an opportunity to see this fabulous collection as well as to be entrusted with some of its specimens.

The newly-donated specimens will join our collection of biofacts that are used as part of Assistance League of Hawaii’s Operation Wildlife program and shared with 4th grade students around Hawaii during each school year.

A big mahalo to BYU-Hawaii for their generosity in sharing their priceless collection with us.

Operation Wildlife Featured on Hawaii News Now

With the presentation to 45 students at Ala Wai Elementary School on March 6, 2023, the Operation Wildlife (OWL) Team finished all the school sessions for this school year.

We shared our OWL presentation at 26 schools, including 6 in Hilo and 5 on Maui, with a total of 1,787 people, including students, teachers and administrators. Sixteen OWL volunteers went out to the schools, and we even had a few non-member volunteers observing at some schools. A couple of our volunteers played critical roles of Neighbor Island advisor and biofact triage specialist!

The best critique comes from teachers. Here are some from this year’s evaluations:

“The students had an amazing experience. A lot of them said that they never would have thought that they would be able to see or touch such beautiful animals in their young lives. One student said it was the best moment he ever had at a school. A lot of my students were inspired to do something and create change because of this presentation. Thank you for creating such a wonderful program for students”.

“Thank you for all that you do. A lot of my kids felt the importance of taking actions to help our native species. It is an experience they will never forget.”

“All of the provided teaching material, video presentation, and viewing of biofacts were above and beyond our expectations. The students loved it!”

The student with the sea turtle, in the photo above, said he had a staring contest with the turtle and lost! Comments like these make it all worthwhile!

We also made the news on Maui and had an interview with Jim Mendoza of Hawaii News Now, thanks to our Public Relations committee led by Linda McColgan.

11,000 T-Shirts Donated to Hawaii’s School Children

As of the end of January 2023, Operation School Bell® has provided 11,000 T-shirts to our schools and students, 51% of qualified schools have been served. We have completed calls to the rest of the 56 schools with reminders to order as soon as possible. The schools are really excited that we’re doing this again this year.

Operation School Bell is Assistance League’s signature program. We have been serving Hawaii Keiki for almost 52 years!
