Annual Meeting & Luncheon – Fiscal Year Successful

The Annual Meeting and Recognition Luncheon on May 16, was a huge success. And the Fiscal Year ending on May 31, consisted of many huge accomplishments, according to out-going President Linda Hall.  She thanked all the members, committee chairs and board members who made these achievements possible.   The free luncheon was chaired by Louise Nuttall, Membership Vice President, with Diana Mann and her committee.  More than 60 members and guests attended.

Following are some of the major achievements:

  • A new website was designed, many thanks to Melinda Colmenero, our able Administrative Assistant, with free hosting. National Assistance League® recognized us for our website and used it as an example for other chapters.
  • A partnership was developed with Denali Foundation to supply art education classes
  • The Thrift Shop reached its goal of $270,000
  • Income from Estate Sales items tripled
  • We gave $101,000 in Scholarships
  • Transitioned Operation School Bell® from purchasing, storing and distributing inventory to shopping days for students at Walmart and Fallas Parades stores
  • Support for the Arts received 715 entries, a record number
  • “Thinking outside the box”, two new fundraisers were tried successfully-Bowling and Crawfish Boil
  • Mary Jo Peckham Awards Luncheon and Style Show’s 25th anniversary celebration honored Leisa Holland Nelson, Phyllis Holland, and Laura Max Rose.
  • Celebration of Giving increased the number of families served
  • The Advisory Board was rejuvenated and nine positions filled
  • The Chapter Visit by National representatives was a success
  • Some members attended Great Day Houston on Channel 11-TV twice to promote ALH
  • Created 50th anniversary & community outreach/fundraiser ad hoc committee
  • We are using social media—Facebook, Twitter, Instagram—more
  • Members volunteered to paint walls, new recognition wall, and cleaned Thrift Shop floors
  • A new air conditioning system was researched, planned and passed the members’ vote, to be installed in June
  • The Operation School Bell building is being repurposed for storing Estate Sale items
  • The Membership calendar is now on line
  • We received awards from National’s Circle Fund, Houston Independent School District, Spring Branch ISD and Briarwood School.
