Operation School Bell® Clothes Kids

Operation School Bell with Representative Alma Allen

In the 2016-2017 school year, Operation School Bell® clothed more than 4,000 elementary students. We helped children in elementary and middle schools in Houston ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Alief ISD, Klein ISD, Yellowstone Academy, and Emergency Aid Coalition, as well as three schools in Area 1 Head Start. “We switched to a “Shopping Days” format this year in which we partnered with local-area Walmart and Fallas Paredes stores and had the students and parents shop for uniforms at $60 per student,” said Stella Evensen, chair.  “This was a transition year in which we used remaining inventory from last year and then finished with shopping days,” Stella added.

The Operation School Bell program promotes self-esteem and self-confidence in children resulting in a more successful education experience. For many children these are the first new school clothes they have ever worn. Stella adds, “The students are invited to participate based on an approved list through each school’s counselor.

“We are proud to celebrate our 49th year of service to the children in the Houston community. And I thank all of the committee members who helped this year,” Stella said.  “In addition, some counselors and principals went above and beyond to help us with the shopping days.  We all enjoyed interacting with the students and their parents.”
