New President’s Message

Thank you so much for honoring me with the position of Assistance League of Houston President for 2018-2019.  I picked up the presidential reins relinquished by Marilyn Brooks and we are off to a great start! Just after we ended our 2017-2018 year with a spectacular anniversary “Hats Off to 50 years!” celebration during our Annual Luncheon, we kicked off 2018-2019 by hosting the Annual Texas Networking Conference. The event, chaired by Linda Williams Hall, our 50th Anniversary Committee chairman, was attended by over 100 of our sister Chapter members. The highlight was an

open house at our Thrift Shop where everyone enjoyed wine and other beverages, hors d’oeuvres, tours, and great networking experiences. We heard so many flattering comments about our great store and facilities! Thanks to all who participated… Well Done!

Please welcome your New Executive Board. These positions were elected by you and filled with your capable, tireless, enthusiastic friends! We got to know each other well at our first meeting and “Board Retreat” in June. This was an opportunity for us to begin planning for the remainder of this fiscal year, and plan we did! You can expect an ongoing examination and evaluation of our programs and fund-raising processes to identify ways we can improve and grow our organization. It’s a daunting task, but you’ve made sure we have the leaders in place to get the job done. We also are rotating some of the Advisory Council participants. I’ll let you know changes as they occur.

Summer is clearly the time of vacations and OSB shopping events. As a result, so many of our dedicated volunteers are working extra shifts in the Thrift Shop so we can keep the shop open during this busy time. It would be a perfect time for members to meet those requirements listed in our standing rules. Besides, it’s FUN! If we’re forced to close the shop for a day due to lack of staff, we lose enough revenue to clothe 13 to 26 children. Call your friends, get a group together, sign up on line or call to get on the schedule, and come on down to help! Those children need school clothes, and we need YOU, so please come if you can.

This will not be a year of all-work-no-play. We have lots of events in the works for members as well. I know you’ve heard of the Astros night out planned for September. We’ve sold close to 600 tickets already! Oh, and watch your newspapers for the cool ads touting Assistance League of Houston in the Chronicle. I’ll do my best to keep you up to date, but watch your email for alerts and stay in touch. Again, thank you so much for your trust. I’m proud to be your President and I look forward to seeing you on September 25th at our General meeting.
