It’s hard to believe we’re almost four months into the new Fiscal Year! As promised, I’d like to give you a brief update of activities in and around the Chapter.
I’d like you to know our Philanthropic Programs were teeming with activity all summer. All funds have been sent to respective Texas colleges for our 2018 Scholarship recipients. Operation School Bell dressing events took place as planned and, for those who couldn’t participate, you would have been so proud to see the happiness in the eyes of the students and the gratitude of the parents upon receiving help with school clothes from Assistance League of Houston. A new location has been identified and secured for the Support for the Arts annual art show beginning in January and the committee opened the call for entry on September 1st for artist participation. The Celebration of Giving committee is already working on stockings and collecting “stuffers” for the young patients at Texas Children’s Hospital. Head Start Readers will soon be making plans to read to young audiences. Is that a busy summer? I’d say so!
Back at the Chapter House, various Committee, Executive Board, and Advisory Council meetings were taking place. Your Executive Board has been busy taking care of business as well as planning for the future by identifying Goals for our Strategic Plan revision. Kathi Hilterman graciously accepted the position of Assistance League of Houston Parliamentarian and will attend Board and Regular meetings in that capacity. Fundraising committees are in place and are now active. The Thrift Shop struggled all summer to have a sufficient number of volunteers but employees and some members went far beyond expectations to keep the shop open and productive. The new Advisory Council met in August for the first time this Fiscal Year. Larry Wright II was added as a member, but we lost Julie Farah due to a career move out of state.
Did you say “fun”? Those of you attending the Chicken Foot Party on September 18th had a treat, and the September 22nd Astros Game Night promises to be a crowd pleaser! We have lots of work ahead of us, fellow members, but the saying, “Work hard; play hard” still applies. Come get that warm feeling again! Bring a friend and introduce him or her to the joys of volunteering. They’ll thank you.
