What is Operation School Bell®?

Operation School Bell program serves underprivileged school age children from TK through 12th grade. This program provides one or all the services including clothes, hunger, supplies, health, and literacy.

How do you determine children eligibility for Operation School Bell?

These children receive free and reduced lunches from the public schools they attend, and they come from socioeconomically disadvantaged families.

What are the guidelines for donating?

The Assistance League provides goods and services to our partners. Together, we curate the best programs to meet the needs of our partners.

What is Baby Bundles Program?

It is a stand-alone program outside the Operation School Bell Program umbrella. We partner with Santa Clara County Public Health Nurses and supply essential baby items to low-income new moms who need counseling on how to care for their new baby.

What supplies are acceptable to donate for baby bundles program?

The ‘Baby Bundles’ tote bag includes hand-made blankets, diapers, sleepers, wash cloths, wipes, developmental toys, books and baby equipment such as strollers, and playpens.

Can you pick up my donation for baby bundles program?

We would like to provide new baby items to new moms. Our donors can arrange drop off with our members at 169 State Street in Los Altos.

What is Assisteens®?

Assisteens is an auxiliary of Assistance League of Los Altos. It is comprised of 7th through 12th graders from local public and private schools who engage in volunteer activities and philanthropic projects throughout Santa Clara County.

Some of these activities include participating in the holiday shopping program for low-income families, working on projects for homeless shelters, making crafts or playing Bingo with residents of a local assisted living community, and other projects where needed.

What skills do teens get from Assisteens program?

The goal of the program is for Assisteens to develop a sense of community awareness, self-reliance, personal responsibility, and leadership skills through guided activities.

I volunteered last year in the Assisteens program and wish to return again this year. What steps do I need to take?

Assisteens is a membership run organization. If you are already a member, simply renew your membership dues annually.

How do I sign up to volunteer?

Is there a time commitment for volunteers?

There are two types of membership, voting and non-voting. We would like voting members to attend our monthly membership meeting and participate in our programs. For non-voting members, attending monthly members is optional but desired. All volunteer hours are defined by our volunteers.

What are the qualifications and age requirement to volunteer?

No age limits are required for volunteers except for Assisteens. See the Assisteens section for details.

Are members of Los Altos Assistance League limited to Los Altos, CA?

Typically, chapter members live in the same town/city as the chapter.

Am I allowed to be a member of two Assistance League chapters?

Yes. Dual membership has voting rights in one chapter only.

Does membership for Los Altos Assistance League require payment?

Yes. Membership renewal is done annually in May.

Are there trainings that volunteers receive before they start?

Throughout the year including webinars organized by National Assistance League.

Who is responsible for overseeing the programs of Los Altos Assistance League?

VP of Programs is the chair for all programs who oversees all the programs at the League. The individual program chair oversees their own individual program.

What are the do and don’ts of volunteering?

We have training sessions throughout the year. Our core values are respect, commitment, leadership, ethics, and accountability. We encourage our members to use common sense and kindness when interacting with our partners.

How do you prepare for volunteering?

We provide training sessions to new members to get them familiarized with our bylaws and policies. No other preparations are needed. Join us, make new friends, and have fun.

What makes a volunteer program successful?

We make positive impact to the people and communities we serve and seeing the people we help flourish.

How can I make a donation anonymously?

Email us not to disclose your name and personal info. We will keep your donation data private.

Can I donate in honor of someone?

Absolutely.

Is my donation secure?

Yes. We use PayPal secure site.

What’s Los Altos Assistance League’s most successful program and why?

We have many successful programs. Many of our stories have been published by the Los Altos Town Crier, The Silicon Valley Voice newspapers and our partners’ websites such as Sunnyvale School District and Foothill-De Anza Community College District. We have also received direct feedback from the people we served that we helped improve their lives.

Do you extend help and donations outside Los Altos, CA?

Yes. We cover Northern Santa Clara County including Palo Alto, Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale, Cupertino, and part of the city of Santa Clara.
