This month’s New Books for Kids Wish List includes popular favorites for young children such as Good Night Moon and Corduroy, as well as “I Survived” books describing historical events. The list also includes sports-focused book sets to appeal to the sports enthusiasts and several dual language books.  We have something for every grade level.

Imagine that one of our Build a Child’s library events is where you receive the very first book to call your own?  We know that the presence of books in the home translates to greater enthusiasm for learning.  Our program ensures that each child who progresses through the school, from kindergarten through 6^th grade, will graduate from the school with 7 books in their personal library.

Our volunteers generally agree that our “Build a Child’s Library” events are their favorite program to participate in.  Seeing the excitement on the faces of the children as they choose a book to keep is very rewarding.  We purchase the books with money raised through generous donations, grants, and fundraising.  We are an all-volunteer organization and can only be successful through the generosity of others.

Designed by the White House Historical Association

 Intricately designed and finished in 24K gold, the Official 2026 White House Christmas Ornament celebrates the 250^th anniversary of our nation’s founding. The front features the Declaration of Independence  and the reverse shows the White House and flags from 1776 and currently. Each ornament ships in a keepsake box, a ribbon for hanging, and an illustrated keepsake booklet.

On Friday, February 13^th, the students at one of our local Title 1 elementary schools were celebrating Valentine’s Day, the 100^th day of school, and our “Build a Child’s Library” event.  Each of the 856 students came to the gymnasium, where they chose a new book from the assortment of books we provided.  Our members, along with their teachers, helped each student choose a book and sign their name inside the cover – making it their very own!  The smiles on the children’s faces were proof of a successful event.

The following week, on February 19, we held our monthly “Weekend Food for Kids” packing event at Dominion Energy.  We provide 1900 bags of non-perishable food each month to children who receive free or reduced-price meals at six Title 1 elementary schools in Northern Virginia. The schools distribute the bags to the children on Fridays so they can be taken home to help alleviate food insecurity over the weekend. The support of Dominion Energy, which partners with us for this amazing program, is monumental.   Dominion provides the space for the packing event, volunteers to help pack and load the food onto the Dominion trucks, and the drivers to deliver the bags to the six schools in Fairfax and Prince William counties. The weekend food helps ensure that students arrive at school on Monday ready to learn and thrive.

Through grants, fundraisers and donations, we raise every dollar needed to purchase the food, clothing and books that support local children in need.  Check out our programs elsewhere on this site to learn how you can get involved. It takes a village.

Gather your friends, grab your clubs and head to Westfields Golf Club on Monday, April 13, for a continental breakfast, 18 holes of golf, and a hot lunch buffet. We will also have raffle prizes and silent auction items.  All proceeds will help support our mission to assist area children in Title 1 elementary schools with food, clothing, books, and other necessities.

Maybe you would like to sponsor a hole or a contest? Video Library | Assistance League – Northern Virginia

It was a beautiful evening for an encore performance. We hosted a wonderful Italian dinner and live music fundraiser at the lovely Springfield Golf and Country Club. Guests enjoyed a delicious, four-course Italian dinner and live music provided by Alex Alburqueque, a Peruvian native baritone who has performed with many opera companies, including the Washington National Opera, Maryland Lyric Opera, and Opera Camerata of Washington DC. Alex was a big hit at last year’s event and returned this year for a terrific encore performance. A 50/50 raffle, a marketplace, and a wine pull put the “fun” in “fundraising.”

Our keynote speaker, Maggie Perez-Rives, the Family Engagement Coordinator at Lynbrook Elementary School, explained how our programs impact the schools we support: the children look forward to receiving the food provided through our Weekend Food for Kids program; new coats and shoes mean children can go outside to play and burn off some energy without being cold; and the books we provide at our “Build a Child’s Library” events are often the only books the students own.

We have so many people and businesses to thank for helping to make this event a huge success. We want to thank the wonderful people at the Springfield Golf and Country Club, including club manager, Steve Lawson, and the events coordinator, Jody Henderson, who were very helpful and accommodating. We appreciate all their support. We also want to acknowledge Basik’s at Home, Café Bottega Italia Leesburg, Manassas Olive Oil, and Cigar Town for their generous donations to our marketplace and raffle prizes. It was truly a grand event!

You will enjoy a delicious four-course, family-style Italian dinner, beautiful vocal entertainment provided by renowned baritone, Alex Alburqueque, a cash bar, a 50/50 raffle and a wine pull. There will be plenty of fun for everyone!
