Every year at the end of February, the 120 chapters of the Assistance League organization participate in Action Week, an initiative to celebrate the birthday of founder\u00a0Anne Banning by helping children to grow and know that others care about them.\u00a0 Each chapter devises its own plan to\u00a0help children\u00a0in need.\u00a0 For many years, our chapter\u2019s Action Week efforts have focused on Literacy, and we have provided new books to\u00a0many\u00a0schools.\u00a0 Most recently, we have held \u2018book fairs\u2019 at selected schools, at which every student receives a brand new book.\u00a0 Our members would come to the school and help each student select a book to take home on a topic of particular interest to that student.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s Action Week initiative again supported literacy, with book donations at four of the Title 1 schools\u00a0<\/strong>we support.\u00a0 Unfortunately, we could not hold our usual book fair, because of Covid restrictions. So, instead we delivered 675\u00a0brand\u00a0new books, in 25 cartons, to the librarian\u00a0at\u00a0one of the school\u2019s we serve.\u00a0 Members of our Literacy Committee worked with the librarian to identify the best books for the school\u2019s student population.\u00a0 We also donated 100 new books to one of the school\u2019s we support.
