Poverty is all around us, if we take the time to see it.\u00a0\u00a0Sizable numbers of struggling families live in our community, despite the wealth of Northern Virginia.\u00a0\u00a0Our programs help students at public schools and their families in Fairfax and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria where between 60% and 95% of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals.\u00a0\u00a0At the nine schools we serve, we provide the basic necessities: weekend food, new clothing, new books, and literacy support.\u00a0\u00a0To pay for those programs, we rely on our\u00a0own\u00a0fund-raising efforts, such as our Giving Tuesday campaign, grants and community support, so we can continue to provide those essential items to elementary school students and their families.<\/p>\n

The need is\u00a0great,\u00a0and the impact of these efforts is immeasurable.\u00a0 One counselor made that point quite poignantly recently, in her comments after we delivered the school\u2019s monthly allocation of Weekend Food for Kids food bags, as well as winter coats, gloves, hats, and scarves:\u00a0\u00a0We are trying to keep them safe and loved.\u00a0 THANK YOU for keeping them warm and with happy tummies!\u00a0 Not enough\u00a0words to\u00a0acknowledge\u00a0the difference you help us make on our students AND their families.<\/i><\/p>\n
