Through our Literacy for Kids Program, we provide one-on-one reading tutoring at several schools each week and donate new books to students at selected schools.\u00a0 We recently held a \u201cBuild-a-Child\u2019s Library\u201d book fair at a Title 1 school in Manassas for 580 students in Pre-K through 5th grade.\u00a0 Each student was allowed to select a book from the new books displayed in the school library on tables specific to grade levels \u2013 including a bilingual book table.\u00a0 Our member volunteers and the school librarians helped the students find the books they would like.\u00a0 Volunteer then stamped the selected books and the students signed their name in the books to indicate it was theirs.\u00a0 Several students asked if they could take their book home and were delighted to learn that they could!\u00a0 An Assistance League bookmark was inserted into each book and the students really liked that.<\/p>\n

A 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0grade class presented the volunteers with a \u201cthank you\u201d poster they had helped their teacher create, with drawings from the students attached.\u00a0 The poster said \u201cI feel excited when I finish the book.\u201d<\/div>\n

Another class returned to the library in the afternoon to present the volunteers with \u201cthank you\u201d cards they created.\u00a0 One student\u2019s card said that the book fair was probably the best part of her day.\u00a0 One young student had a particular book in mind and a volunteer searched all of the boxes until she found it for him and he was thrilled!\u00a0 It was a great day for the students and our member volunteers!<\/div>\n
