Last week, we celebrated National Literacy Month by holding a book fair at a Fairfax County elementary school.\u00a0\u00a0Fifteen of our dedicated members helped the students choose a book to take home at our Build a Child\u2019s Library event. The book selections were arranged on tables by grade level and our volunteers assisted the students in making their selections.\u00a0\u00a0A volunteer stamped each book with \u201cThis Book Belongs to\u201d and the students signed the books and got special Assistance League bookmarks.\u00a0\u00a0Also, teachers selected books for their students who were absent.\u00a0\u00a0In all, more than 700 students received a new book.\u00a0\u00a0We used some of the grant funds received from the Friends of the Tysons-Pimmit Regional Library to purchase books for this event.<\/p>\n

We love to hear the students say \u201cOh, that\u2019s a good book\u201d because it means that they are reading, that our book selections are spot on, and that the student next to them gets a good book suggestion.\u00a0\u00a0It is also heart-warming when the students ask: \u201cCan I take it home?\u201d and we say \u201cYes, it is your book!\u201d\u00a0\u00a0One student chose a book for her little brother, instead of herself, because \u201cHe doesn\u2019t have a book.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0A school administrator commented on how great the event was and said \u201cYesterday, many of our students didn\u2019t have a book.\u00a0\u00a0Tonight, over 700 students will have books in their homes.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The students are always so grateful, school staff are happy their students have new books, and our members feel the joy of making a difference for so many.\u00a0\u00a0It was a great day for all who participated!<\/p>\n
