This year marks\u00a0Assistance League of Northern Virginia\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a020th Anniversary<\/b>\u00a0of\u00a0serving the most vulnerable students and families in the community. To celebrate this milestone, we are honored to welcome two distinguished members of the Virginia General Assembly, Senator Stella\u00a0Pekarsky\u00a0and Delegate Irene Shin, who sponsored resolutions recognizing\u00a0our history of service.<\/p>\n

The resolutions will be formally presented during the Weekend Food for Kids<\/b> food-packing event on September 19, when Senator Pekarsky, Delegate Shin, volunteers from the Assistance League, and representatives from Dominion Energy Northern Virginia will be in attendance.<\/div>\n

The\u00a0Weekend Food for Kids<\/strong>\u00a0program ensures that students who receive free or reduced-price meals at school have food over the weekends. Since its inception in 2010, the program has expanded its reach, increasing the number of schools served, the quantity of food bags delivered, and the provision of grocery gift cards to families in need. Last school year alone, we\u00a0delivered 13,760 bags of food and 2,712 grocery gift cards to 8 NOVA schools.<\/p>\n

During the event, volunteers will pack\u00a01840 bags of shelf-stable, nutritious food for children who might otherwise go hungry over the weekend. Dominion Energy volunteers will then deliver the bags to six Title I schools in Fairfax and Prince William Counties.<\/p>\n
