[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]IN THE BEGINNING. . .<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\"Tropical<\/a> In the spring of 1982, Pat Borges was on a vacation in Hawaii with a friend. Sitting around the pool, they discussed the possibility of forming an Assistance League chapter in San Jose.\u00a0 Pat decided that she would try to get a chapter started.<\/p>\n

When she returned, Pat talked with many of her neighbors and friends to see if there was any interest in forming a new philanthropic group in Almaden Valley. She had been a member in Sacramento, and her friend Heather\u00a0Gilleland\u2019s mother was a member in the L.A. area.\u00a0She felt there was sufficient interest and decided to proceed.<\/p>\n

\"1982<\/a>The first \u201ccoffee\u201d was planned and invitations were sent out. The invitation list consisted of Pat\u2019s friends from her interests in bridge, bowling and golf. Heather was President of the Williams PTA and she added names to the list. Then, all of their immediate friends and neighbors were asked to join and to add their friends and neighbors to the list.\u00a0Everyone<\/em> was asking everyone<\/em> if they would like to join! The first \u201ccoffee” was held at the Almaden Country Club and there was an excellent turnout! Over 60 women expressed an interest in becoming members.<\/p>\n

A steering committee was formed consisting of volunteers who were willing to give of their time to begin the process of establishing\u00a0Assistance Guild<\/em> of San Jose. The first meetings were held in the meeting room at the local bowling lanes because so many of the prospective members, including Pat, bowled on Thursday mornings and it was easier to just have the meetings at 12:00 right there! In June of 1983 we became a Guild with 66 charter members.<\/p>\n

One of the key members during the formation of Assistance League of San Jose was the treasurer. She filed all of the applications for non-profit status and set up the original books. This was no easy task as you all might imagine. The bylaws were written by the steering committee, submitted to National and accepted by National and the membership. Officers were elected, Pat Borges (we referred to her as our \u201cFounding Mother\u201d) was elected President and we were on our way! Pat passed away in 2004, but she was our honored guest at our 20th<\/sup> Anniversary in 2003.<\/p>\n

Several of our members suggested that we contact the Episcopal Church in Almaden to see if we could use their Fellowship Hall (downstairs) for our meetings. They agreed and we kept the meeting time at 12:00, but met at the church instead of the bowling alley.<\/p>\n

The members agreed that we should have two projects (now called programs); one involving children and one for the elderly. Fingerprinting and Telecare were subsequently established. Before we could have a project, we had to have some money. The first fund raisers were \u201cDumb Bunny Bridge\u201d and a \u201cPound Auction\u201d, both held downstairs at the church. We didn\u2019t raise a ton of money, but we all worked together, invited all of our friends who were not already members and we had a wonderful time. These fundraisers netted us less than $1000 each, but it was enough to get started.<\/p>\n

\"1983<\/a>The Chapter motto: S H A R E S was chosen. The letters stand for: Sharing All Resources and Essential Services<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Then the chapter needed a logo. The logo we designed was used on all of our stationary — you can still see it occasionally on pins worn by a charter member. Choosing that logo took many hours and several votes before the design was finally accepted. Our chapter colors were also chosen (blue & yellow). We now use the National logo and colors. They are red\/white\/blue as adopted by National Assistance League.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>We were finally chartered on June 6, 1988 <\/strong>with Margie Bruno as our first chapter President.
\nOver time we have added many members, moved our monthly meetings to a larger space and established new programs,
\nadapting to the needs of the chapter and our community.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”blue”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\"\"<\/a>AWARDS<\/em><\/strong>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”9064″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d” onclick=”link_image”][vc_column_text]On September 1, 1998, in our tenth year as a Chapter, we received our first City of San Jose Commendation for our service to the community.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”9076″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d” onclick=”link_image” css=”.vc_custom_1698440397043{margin-top: 25px !important;}”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1698463134667{margin-bottom: 25px !important;}”]On April 23, 2013, President Rachel Hackett and several members from the Chapter received a second Commendation from the City Council of San Jose.\u00a0 It was presented by Johnny Khamis representing District 10 in appreciation of all the work we do in the community.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”9069″ img_size=”250×175″ alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d” onclick=”link_image”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1698463147663{margin-bottom: 25px !important;}”]On September 20, 2018, we celebrated 25 years of providing students with school uniforms through Operation School Bell. San Jose Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco presented President Donna Christian with a third Commendation plaque from the City of San Jose.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”9079″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” style=”vc_box_shadow_3d” onclick=”link_image”][vc_column_text]On April 10, 2019, Assistance League of San Jose was awarded the Crystal Bowl Award from the Junior League of San Jose for Operation School Bell. Gifts were presented to Operation School Bell Co-chairs Sylvain Roberts and Judy Keniston.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_separator color=”blue”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]PROGRAMS

2007<\/strong>\u00a0Readers are Leaders<\/a>, reading to children in the classroom<\/p>\n

2008<\/strong>\u00a0Caring Hands<\/a>, creating knitted and crocheted items for infants, chemo patients and aging seniors<\/p>\n

2012<\/strong> Assist-a-Shelter<\/a>, volunteering at Family Supportive Housing, CityTeam and Parisi House on the Hill<\/p>\n
