Assistance League of Seattle is a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit that serves at-risk, disadvantaged students in Seattle. Our work focuses on three philanthropic programs, which advance the education of underserved students from kindergarten through adults. We operate on the vision that quality lives are achieved through education.
Founded in 1962, Assistance League of Seattle is a chapter of the national Assistance League. Today, there are 120 Assistance League chapters in 26 states with over 23,000 members. In 2014-15, Assistance League chapters served 1.5 million people, returned over $38 million to local communities and invested ~3.2 million service hours.
The Philanthropic Projects of Assistance League of Seattle:
Through our Operation School Bell® program, we provide new school clothing, shoes, a health kit and backpack to 2,000+ underserved students in grades K-5 in Seattle Public Schools each year. By providing these disadvantaged students with weather-appropriate clothing, we see an increase in self-confidence which makes them much more likely to attend school, participate in class and stay focused on learning. As of May 1, we have clothed 2,249 students this school year!
Enrichment Scholarship Program awards 60+ scholarships for extracurricular classes and summer camp programs for Seattle school students in grades 6-11. Scholarships are granted in a variety of fields including music, art, science, debate, mathematics, language, drama, technology, leadership and outdoor experiences. Students who are given the opportunity to go beyond the learning available to them in their school, often become more passionate about learning in general, and often times are more eager to take on leadership roles. In 2016, we awarded 59 scholarships to deserving students.
Financial Aid for Education scholarships are available for students with a significant financial need, who are enrolled in a King County public college or vocational/technical school. This scholarship covers full tuition and up to $550 in books per quarter for students, as they work towards their AA degree, Transfer Degree, or Vocational/Technical Certificate. Each scholarship recipient is matched with one of our Assistance League of Seattle members, who acts as a mentor for the duration of their scholarship, therefore maximizing their opportunity for collegiate success. We currently support 24 students.
Assistance League of Seattle Thrift Shop, our largest, ongoing source of revenue also provides an essential service to the community by providing quality, low cost apparel, household goods, and other much-needed merchandise. Our store also provides the opportunity for Seattleites to donate items to an organization serving only local needs.
