Florence Johnson Leaves Her Legacy<\/h2>\n

\"Florence<\/a>In 1992, Florence Johnson was one of the original 39 community-minded women to form a Steering Committee to introduce National Assistance League to southeastern Michigan. Her sense of commitment to the community and the welfare of those in need weighed heavily on her mind, and she jumped at the chance to help start Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan. Throughout her 24 years as a member, Florence was a longtime promoter and generous personal contributor to the Chapter’s mission.<\/p>\n

Florence was passionate about Assistance League and was committed to leaving a lasting legacy to the chapter. Her bequest of $100,000 was used to start an Endowment Fund to forever continuing her commitment to both Assistance League and to the future welfare of the community she cared so dearly about. We are honored to have Florence Johnson as the first Charter Member of our Legacy Society.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Reasons for Joining Our Legacy Society<\/p>\n

Periodically, we are pleased to acknowledge and highlight some of our Legacy Society members. \u00a0These people have decided to include Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan in their estate plans, or have donated to the Endowment Plan.\u00a0The stories you will read encompass a wide range of reasons and passion for contributing to the long-term support of this great nonprofit organization.<\/p>\n

Charter Legacy Society Member<\/h3>\n

Sue Burback was an English teacher at Ferndale High School for 33 years where she also coached varsity boys and girls tennis teams.\u00a0 In 1992, she was named\u00a0 Oakland County high school teacher of the year by WDIV TV. She retired in 2002.<\/p>\n

It didn\u2019t take long for Sue to begin working children in another way.\u00a0 In 2004 she joined Assistance League of Southeast Michigan at the recommendation of a friend. Sue claims she \u201dquickly became committed to this hands-on organization that focused on the needs within our community.\u201d \u00a015 years later, Sue is still a very active member and contributor.<\/p>\n

For three years, Sue was an Operation School Bell chair-person, and she continues to be a liaison between schools and the organization. She was a \u00a0Mistletoe Marketplace chair in 2009 and 2018, and also served on the Board in 2006 -07.\u00a0 Sue has been a tutor in the \u201cOne to One\u201d Tutoring program, and has served as a liaison for \u201cLinks to Creative Teaching.\u201d\u00a0 She currently serves on the Endowment and Planned Giving Committee.<\/p>\n

Because of her work and experience as a member, Sue says\u00a0 \u201cit was an easy decision to include a financial donation to Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan in my Trust. Having turned 70, I am subjected to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from my IRA.\u00a0 Since some of the IRA would eventually be going to Assistance League through my Trust, I realized I could take a portion of my RMD and make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly to Assistance League.\u00a0 The benefit is that the QCD is not taxed; my income does not move into a higher tax bracket, and my payments for Medicare do not increase.\u00a0 But, most importantly, Assistance League benefits immediately.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Sue often relates what her father used to say to her:<\/p>\n

\u201cHe who gives while he lives, also knows where it goes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Susan\u2019s generous legacy of giving will continue thru the endowment of Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan.\u00a0 We thank her for the lasting support she is leaving to all of our programs!<\/p>\n
