Provides new school clothing and\/or necessities for students. For some students, this may be the first new coat or clothing they can call their own, bringing smiles to many faces.<\/p>\n

Elementary School Clothing Distribution<\/strong><\/p>\n

Members and Community Volunteers set up a “store” in designated schools on scheduled days, helping children choose a new warm coat, hat, gloves, tops, (uniforms for specified public schools), underwear, socks, hygiene kit, book and a duffle bag.<\/p>\n

Our chapter collaborates with local nonprofit agencies to help provide clothing and\/or necessities for children through Blast Off 2 School, The Children\u2019s Center and Alternatives for Girls.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, 64,176<\/strong>\u00a0lives impacted from Clothing Distributions. This year 3,479<\/strong> recipients benefited at 13<\/strong> Distributions.<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]Operation School Bell was brought back to its earlier pre-Covid 19 style this year.\u00a0 Our members and community volunteers visited schools and acted as personal shoppers for children in need as we set up a store-like setting in their school gymnasiums.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

EXTENDING A HELPING HAND Assistance League\u00ae of Southeastern Michigan receives generous support from Giffin, Inc. benefitting Operation School Bell\u00ae, chapter\u2019s signature program that provides clothing and necessities for students in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. For the past two years, Giffin employees have supported Operation School Bell with funds and volunteer hours at school distributions as well as helping at our warehouse. Designating their 2023 \u2018Giffin Gives Back\u2019 fundraiser\u2019s proceeds to 2024 Operation School Bell, Dominic Ventola, Giffin VP Operations, presented a check for $26,278 along with a check for $2500 from their suppliers, Outboard Technologies and Automotive Solutions of America. They look forward to joining chapter members at the Fall school distributions to once again bring smiles to over 3,500 students.<\/div>\n
Operation School Bell provides students with a new winter jacket, hat, gloves, tops, underwear, socks, hygiene kit, and book with the aim of improving self-esteem and school attendance. Since 1995, the all-volunteer chapter has impacted the lives of 64,000 local students in three counties. \u201cThe Giffin employees are an incredibly generous group. They not only help us monetarily through their fundraisers but also by their presence at our distributions,\u201d said President Denise Kaminske. ROCHESTER, Michigan \u2013 <\/strong>For the first time in two years, more than 400 students ages pre-K to high school shopped in person at the annual Blast Off 2 School event at held Neighborhood House on August 13.<\/p>\n

Now in its sixth year, the annual program is sponsored by Assistance League\u00ae of Southeastern Michigan in partnership with Neighborhood House and Ascension Providence Hospital, all based in Rochester.<\/p>\n

This year, 433 children shopped for themselves with the help of an Assistance League volunteer. Each child received a bag full of new necessities: socks, underwear, shirt, hoodie, hygiene kit and an age-appropriate book.<\/p>\n

Neighborhood House also gave each student a backpack filled with school supplies.<\/p>\n

Due to previous COVID-19 precautions in 2020 and 2021, only \u201ccontactless\u201d shopping was allowed. Eligible families then picked up their child\u2019s bags at curbside.<\/p>\n

One youngster, Jackson, 10, was so excited that he kept pulling items out of his blue Assistance League bag to show his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a Minions toothbrush, underwear and socks!\u201d he said. When she tried to get him to leave, Jackson said, \u201cWait, I\u2019m not done showing you. Got a book, too!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur goal every year is to ensure that these children have what they need to begin a new school year,\u201d said Cindy Weber, the Southeastern Michigan chapter\u2019s president. \u201cIt\u2019s always a privilege for our organization to be a part of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan\u2019s established\u00a0Philanthropic Programs include Operation School Bell for school children,\u00a0Wee Help for infants, Assault\u00a0Survivor Kits for victims of abuse\u00a0and Nourishing Neighbors for those with food insecurity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0The event was free for Neighborhood House clients and low-income families who live in Auburn Hills, Rochester, Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Leonard and Lakeville.<\/div>\n

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan\u2019s Legacy of Literacy book drive was extremely successful. An initiative of National Assistance League, the Michigan chapter collected 2,648 books, benefitting our philanthropic programs such as: Operation School Bell, Wee Help Kits, and One-2-One Tutoring. Our book drive also serviced community programs such as Neighborhood House Blast Off 2 School, Children\u2019s Center of Detroit, several Michigan tri-county schools, and the Rochester Hills Public Library. The book drive committee, under the chairmanship of Barb Roller, had the unique experience of accepting a donation of books from Bob Lytle, local Rochester, MI pharmacist, and children\u2019s author. We aided in distributing class sets of his various book titles to schools whose students were recipients of the Operation School Bell program. To date, Bob has donated 685 books to our programs. The gift of books continues to bring joy for reading to many students.<\/p>\n

All these basic necessities were provided to the students at no cost by Assistance League\u00ae of Southeastern Michigan.<\/p>\n

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan received a most generous grant of $30,000 from the David W. Elliott Memorial Foundation. The funds will support the Operation School Bell philanthropic program and will provide new clothing and\/or necessities for an entire school in the Pontiac School District.<\/p>\n

Since 1995, over 40,000 local students have benefitted from clothing distributions with the aim of improving self-esteem and school attendance.<\/p>\n

Assistance League President, Rosemary Dirksen and Grant Committee member, Barb Bakker received the check from David Elliott Foundation Board President, Henry Woloson and Board Director, Cheryl Gambaro. When the check was presented at a regular membership meeting, the members stood in appreciation of this generous donation which will impact the lives of so many students<\/p>\n

David W. Elliott was a long-time resident of Rochester, Michigan, until his death in 2011. As part of the estate plan, a foundation was established in 2015 to support charitable projects.<\/p>\n
