Assistance League’s new pilot program: Backpack Buddies

Did you know that one in six children in America go hungry? Many of these children eat their only meals at school because their families are unable to consistently purchase and provide nutritious food. Assistance League of Atlanta’s new pilot program, Backpack Buddies, provides food for children who might otherwise lack meals over the weekend by sending them home with a backpack of food on Fridays. We will purchase, store and pack the food into plastic bags and deliver to the school where the social workers fill the backpacks and hand them out. The children return the backpacks on Monday in order to receive food the following Friday. Our pilot program begins in September at Dresden Elementary School in DeKalb County. We will be providing 25 children with a backpack full of healthy food for each weekend during the school year. Some local organizations have already mobilized to collect food for this program.
