Assistance League Scholarships

Assistance League of Austin members and Community Volunteers mentor students to help provide success in their chosen fields in courses at Austin Community College (ACC).  Tuition, fees and books are paid for selected scholars.

The Austin Community College Foundation selects scholarship recipients on the basis of need and desire to learn.  They are required to maintain at least six credit hours per semester and a minimum GPA of 2.5.  Preference is given to Austin area students who have a strong desire to become productive members of this community and who do not have college experience in their family background.

Thanks to the dedicated financial support of Assistance League of Austin, and generous grants from the Sooch Foundation, Topfer Family Foundation, Suanne Davis Roueche Scholarship and Besand Family Scholarship, our Scholarship Program has expanded in size and scope since 1998 when it was established with a small endowment and initial scholarships for five scholars.  The number of scholars has increased exponentially over the past 20 years, reaching a record 66 scholarships in the academic year 2018-2019.  Graduation results for our scholars are extraordinarily high, and especially so when compared to national and Austin Community

College specific graduation rates.  The average GPA for ALA scholars is 3.36.  We credit some of this success to the advocacy program that pairs an Assistance League of Austin member with each scholar, providing a unique support system, making available discretionary funds for meeting unexpected financial challenges to academic progress, and offering additional emotional and responsive support.  Scholars are recognized as Assistance League, AL/Sooch, AL/Topfer, AL/Suanne Davis Roueche Scholarship and AL/Besand Family Scholarship Scholars; and the designation follows them onto their curriculum resumé and graduation ceremony program.
