Assistance League of the Bay Area Recognizes Community Supporters

Assistance League® of the Bay Area recognized three deserving individuals at their membership luncheon and awards ceremony on Monday, May 17th.

Receiving the Stuart W. Williams Heroes of Positive Endeavors (HOPE) Award were Dr. Thomas O. Thomas of NASA Vision Center and Garry Charter.

Dr. Thomas of NASA Vision Center took on the existing vision program of Operation Support Our Schools when he bought the practice several years ago. This year we completed 40 referrals for vision services. The feedback we get from the children is amazing! Dr. Thomas and his staff bend over backward to quickly replace missing or broken glasses or to provide exams and prescriptions for new glasses. The at-risk children of Clear Creek and Dickinson ISDs served through the Operation Support Our Schools programs are able to learn and stay in school because of the generosity of Dr. Thomas and his staff.

Garry Charter has been a long-time friend to Assistance League of the Bay Area. He has participated in our special events at the Resale Shop, attended our annual fundraising events, and praised our work to his many clients. This year Garry brought in a huge donation of beautiful furniture to the chapter’s award-winning Resale Shop. He probably wasn’t aware of the impact that had on our chapter – both financially and emotionally. After being closed from March to June for COVID, this donation and the significant financial boost from the sales, helped the chapter get back on track and let the organization know this crisis could be overcome.

Joshua Acevedo received the Glass Slipper Award.

Mr. Acevedo, Director of Macy’s Baybrook Sales and Customer Experience, contacted the chapter after finding out about the philanthropic work in Operation Cinderella. His donation of 500 prom dresses allowed at-risk students to have beautiful new dresses to wear to their special event. The children’s clothing was sold in our resale shop and the money generated from those sales covered the costs of jewelry, purses, shoes, and tuxedo rentals for the boys. Our Cinderellas, the fellas, and the Fairy Godmothers are all so grateful!
