Operation School Bell®

Assistance League recognizes that students who are good readers have a greater chance for academic success. Operation School Bell® Literacy+ volunteers meet weekly at Bethune Community School to read and play educational games with their second grade reading buddies. The program, also, provides books for the students’ home libraries and offers educational enrichment experiences for the students and their families. All second grade teachers at Bethune agree that their students show an increased interest in books and literature as a result of this program and have had overwhelmingly positive student feedback.

Operation School Bell® Our School Reads

Operation School Bell® Our School Reads encourages a shared love of reading by providing books to groups of students to read together within the school community. In 2019-20 Assistance League provided the book “Because of Winn Dixie” by local author Kate DeCamillo to all 2,700 fourth graders in the Minneapolis Public School District.

Even my lowest level students feel successful during Reading Buddy time.

My students love to attend their reading session with the buddies every Wednesday! The simple fact of being able to share reading with someone, along with being read to, has been very valuable to students of this age.

Students have loved receiving the new books.
