Operation School Bell®
Literacy+

Assistance League recognizes that students who are good readers have a greater chance for academic success. Operation School Bell Literacy+ volunteers meet weekly to provide one-on-one literacy mentoring for second grade students at Bethune Arts Magnet School. The program also provides books for the students’ home libraries and funds guest author visits as well as other educational enrichment experiences. During the 2020-21 school year, we provided book bags filled with books and games and funded access to an online interactive reading program for second graders. When asked about this program, teachers stated: Students feel successful during Reading Buddy time. They love seeing/learning through the special event experiences. It increases their exposure to various people and things which strengthens their interests.

Operation School Bell®
Our School Reads

Operation School Bell Our School Reads provides books and sponsors related events for an entire school to create a shared reading experience. Due to distance learning in 2020-2021, we pivoted to support 65 preschool students at Mona Moede Early Learning Center providing twelve books for each of the 65 preschool students. In the prior year, Assistance League provided the book “Because of Winn-Dixie” by local author Kate DeCamillo to all 2700 fourth graders in the Minneapolis Public School District.

Even my lowest level students feel successful during Reading Buddy time.

My students love to attend their reading session with the buddies every Wednesday! The simple fact of being able to share reading with someone, along with being read to, has been very valuable to students of this age.
