Low income school-aged children receive new clothes, shoes, hand-knitted hats, and dental supplies. When a child’s basic needs are met, they can focus on their education and have a better opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. This fiscal year, 753 children from 42 schools across Washington County from Enterprise to Hildale, plus Cedar City in Iron County, received new school clothing, shoes, and supplies.
Since our inception in 2008, we have always participated in Read Across America, an NEA program celebrating books and readers. This year we traveled to Water Canyon Elementary in Hildale to read to the children at this relatively new school. In addition, we will read to students at Escalante Valley Elementary in Beryl. Each of the nearly 400 children receive a book of their own to take home. Additional books were donated to the classrooms or school libraries.
Our 2018 Preschool Reading Program started in January in four Title I classrooms at Red Mountain in Ivins, Heritage in St. George, and Coral Canyon in Washington. Approximately 30 member volunteers read to the kids in one hour intervals – why not become a member and join us!
