Las Primeras

Las Primeras is a fundraising auxillary that raises money to support the charitable programs of the Assistance League of San Pedro South Bay. It’s members are comprised of a small group of dedicated women who make time from their busy schedules to raise money to help meet the needs of the community. Since 1964 Las Primeras has raised money for Assistance League and made generous contributions each year to the various charitable programs. We meet at The Chapter house in San Pedro once a month in the evening on the first Thursday of every month except July and August. Each meeting starts out with a social hour where volunteers bring food and drink on a rotating basis. Recently the group has developed a monthly book group and a “Let’s Dine Out” monthly social event, both of which are optional. Everyone in the community is welcome to join us, including interested men.

How to Join

New members are accepted throughout the year and dues are pro-rated depending on the time the member joined. Members of Las Primeras will help orient the new member and provide visuals to describe our mission. We officially welcome new members at a ceremony held in May. We have our own officers and conduct business at every meeting. Officers are nominated and elected each year. For further information about Las Primeras please contact 310 832-8355 or alsp-sb@sbcglobal.net.

Dues

Members in Las Primeras are also members of the National Assistance League and part of the dues goes to National organization. Member dues are $75 for the first year and $60 for subsequent years New member dues are $75 for the first year and $60 for each subsequent year.

Membership Requirements

Each member should plan to attend all monthly meetings and support the Las Primeras fundraiser. Each member is obligated to purchase three (3) tickets to the major fundraising event at a cost of approximately $110 per ticket plus donating an auction item worth $50 or more. We all work together to present a lovely fundraiser each year that raises around $25,000 for the Assistance League and involves each member’s participation and commitment. Members may also choose to participate in Operation School Bell, work in the Post Office, or volunteer a few hours staffing the Gift Shop. There are many other opportunities to volunteer for events that ultimately contribute positively to the local community.

Projects

Fundraising

The Main Fundraiser is usually held in October at a local venue. A theme is chosen and decorations and activities compliment the theme. The Fundraiser usually involves a meal, a silent auction, entertainment and fun atmosphere. Members are encouraged to bring friends and family members. Social events are held and enjoyed by members throughout the year, some of which may raise funds to contribute to Assistance League.

Social Activities

A social hour precedes the monthly meetings and allows members to mingle and get to know each other. In December, a “Holiday Meeting” is planned which usually takes place at a location other than the chapter house. In April, the Installation of New Officers and New Members is held at a local restaurant. Other optional social events are enjoyed throughout the year.
