The Assistance League of Minneapolis-St. Paul is expanding its support programs to Richfield.

The organization has been based in Richfield since 2001, and organizers say they wanted to expand their services to their own hometown. According to the organization, nearly 70 percent of Richfield students are on free or reduced-price lunch, prompting it to offer its Community Outreach and Links to Learning programs to Richfield schools.

The Community Outreach program offers clothing and winter wear for students as well as school supplies for classrooms.

This year, the Assistance League will offer snow pants and waterproof mittens to many students at the four Richfield elementary schools: Centennial Elementary, Sheridan Elementary, Richfield Dual Language School and Richfield S.T.E.M.

Teachers at those same schools will also be getting classroom supplies for students who don’t have any to use. Educators had a chance to learn more about the new programs Tuesday.
