Redlands – Celebrates 100 Years of Good Works

What began a century ago as an effort to support World War I is today one of Redlands’ longest-running philanthropic endeavors.

On Monday, Oct. 9, Assistance League of Redlands celebrates the centennial of its Thrift Shop, which for 100 years has raised funds to support the league’s work.

“Redlands has been known for its philanthropy for its 129-year history,” said Mayor Paul Foster. “Leading the way for 100 years has been Assistance League of Redlands.”

But it was only recently that the league realized the historic significance of its shop.

The Red Cross of Redlands began collecting funds and supplies to support war efforts 100 years ago. The thrift store was borne of that effort, supported by Assistance League volunteers. Those facts were unknown to current members until uncovered by local historian Nathan Gonzales.

“Nathan helped with the installation of new members this past year and, since he is a historian, he did research and said, ‘Do you know you have been doing good works in the community for 100 years?’” said Paulette Surdzial, the league’s public relations chairwoman. “We couldn’t believe it when we heard the whole story.”

The league will celebrate its 100 years of service Monday at the Colton Avenue thrift shop with historical displays, refreshments and a flag ceremony.

The Redlands chapter of  Assistance League, which counts 62 active members and more than 100 Assisteens® (junior) members, is one of 120 chapters nationwide. According to Assistance League, the organization has 23,000 members across the country, all working to make the world a better place through programs that meet the specific needs of their community.

In Redlands, the league emphasizes assisting youth through fundraisers such as the annual Camellia Luncheon. Other programs include Operation School Bell®, which provides school clothes for elementary school children from low-income families in the Redlands and Yucaipa-Calimesa school districts, creating Assault Survivor Kits® and organizing dental services for local elementary school children during national children’s dental health month.
