Charlotte – Partners to Support Summer Food Program

The end of the school year bring big smiles to most kids as summer break begins. But for kids at risk of hunger, the end of school, means the end of healthy meals they get every day.

That is why today, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, launched this year’s Summer Feeding Program for Children.

“Since 1981 our number one goal is to make sure children are not hungry,” Kay Carter told us at today’s launch.

The CEO of Second Harvest described just how great the need is for kids across their 19-county service area across the Carolinas.

“The need is great. 180,000 children are living in, or at, the poverty line in our region. 44,000 here in Mecklenburg county. Think about it, that is 18 percent of our children in Mecklenburg alone. This is one of the most affluent counties, if not THE most affluent in our state. Yet we still have eighteen percent of children living in poverty. That’s why we want to draw attention to it. And help them,” Carter said.

Several partner agencies presented checks today for Second Harvest’s Summer Feeding Program, including Assistance League of Charlotte, Albemarle Foundation/ Grow the Good, Golden State Foods Foundation, and Hendrick Automotive Group and Hendrick Cares.

The donations totaled just over one hundred and fifty-eight thousand dollars.
