Chaves County – Operation School Bell Benefits from Golf Tournament

Proceeds from the 26th annual Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic were distributed Thursday during a late afternoon ceremony at Desert Sun Motors. Travis Hicks, Desert Sun CEO, presented checks to Community Kitchen and Wings for LIFE totaling $18,000.

Bill Cooper received the $12,000 check on behalf of Community Kitchen. The organization serves more than 32,000 free meals each [auth] year to people in need.

“We are just overwhelmed by this gift. It couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Cooper. “We’re looking forward to using it to keep people fed.”

Shelly Currier accepted a $6,000 check to Wings for LIFE for “Building Assets,” a successful prevention program reaching 275 elementary school children with basic skills they need to resist risky behavior and meet life’s challenges.

“This contribution comes at a much needed time for us as our program continues to grow and we service more and more families and children,” said Currier.

Other contributions made by the golf tournament were: $1,000 to the Assistance League of Chaves County for their Operation School Bell, which provides new school clothes for needy children; $500 to Main Street Arts for their community art programs, and $500 to the Roswell Rotary Backpack Program that provides weekend food for needy school children.

The Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic is a PGA-sanctioned, 36-hole golf tournament that was played July 17-19 at the Nancy Lopez Golf Course at Spring River. Thirty-five professional golfers and 89 amateurs competed in the event, which raised about $25,000 for local causes.

Over the last 26 years the Rotary Desert Sun Golf Classic has raised more than $700,000 for worthwhile causes in Chaves County. The event is presented annually by the Roswell Rotary Club, Pecos Valley Rotary Club and Sunrise Rotary Club. Major sponsor is Desert Sun Motors of Roswell.
