reusable bags that will soon be distributed to elementary schoolchildren in our community.
Since 1967, Assistance League® of Diablo Valley’s nonprofit, philanthropic programs have supported those in the Contra Costa community who are vulnerable. More recently, Assistance League of Diablo Valley participated in Corporate Caring Volunteers Week. Observed from September 19 through 24, its goal was to connect thousands of committed, high quality volunteers from Bay Area businesses to hundreds of projects staffed by local nonprofit organizations.
Since 1994, Operation School Bell, a nationally acclaimed philanthropic program, has provided clothing and shoe cards to local elementary schoolchildren, an endeavor which has consistently resulted in improved attendance, campus citizenship and academic performance. In 2015-2016 alone, Operation School Bell served 4,249 appreciative students.
Eager to extend “hands-on” support, seven Chevron employee volunteers arrived at the chapter’s Annex on September 20 for an Operation School Bell “Bag Some Smiles” event. After a brief presentation from Corporate Partners Committee Chairman Linda Mercer, the energetic employee volunteers dialed up “Human Energy” as they worked side-by-side with chapter members to ensure a successful school experience for our community’s most treasured resource. In a mere two hours, all involved had successfully placed six pairs of socks, six pairs of underwear, a shoe gift card, a sweatshirt, two pairs of pants for the boys or one pair of pants and one skort (upon request) for the girls, and three white, collared shirts—all into large, reusable blue bags! When community-minded businesses connect with nonprofit organizations by pooling their resources and talents, everyone in the community wins!
