From Assistance League of Kansas City press release:
Small Nonprofits Unite to Aid Assault Victims
Sometimes chance meetings become more than just an encounter in time. Sometimes they become larger than you could imagine and the ripple effect that occurs grows in exponential ways. Take for example the chance meeting of Assistance League of Kansas City and MADI Apparel. Through a shared passion of providing assistance to those in need of comfort following an assault, a worthwhile partnership has been formed. Make a Difference Intimates Apparel (MADI), a local company that sells high quality bamboo underwear, has made it their mission that for each pair of underwear they sell, they will donate a pair of underwear to a domestic violence shelter or organization that assists victims of sexual assault. Through Assistance League’s partnership with Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA), our two organizations became acquainted and over 150 pair of underwear have been donated to the Assault Survivor Kits which are assembled by the member volunteers of Assistance League then given to MOCSA who distribute them to area hospitals to aid victims of sexual assault.
In early spring of 2016, Thrive Pilates & Movement Studio approached MADI to partner for a series of Pop-Up Pilates classes offered by Thrive. Lauren Thompson, owner of Thrive, states “We run a number of different Pop-Up Pilates events throughout the year. We always partner with one other small business and one nonprofit group. We teach a Pilates class at the small business location and all the money earned from ticket sales goes to the nonprofit. In the case of our event with MADI, the donations were in the form of underwear. Our primary focus at Thrive is on woman’s fitness. The opportunity to partner with MADI was a wonderful way for us to expand our work in supporting women of Kansas City.”
On October 31, Hayley Besheers, founder of MADI Apparel, Hanna Veatch, Advocacy Specialist from MOCSA, Cindy McGinnis, President Assistance League of Kansas City, and Margie Thomas, President-elect Assistance League of Kansas City, met at the chapter’s Administrative Center to receive the generous donation of 40 pair of underwear (the proceeds of the Thrive Pilates event) which will be included in the Assault Survivors Kits given to MOCSA.
