Rochester-area childcare workers and teachers demonstrated love and compassion for local families in need when the staff at Premier Academy in Oakland Township collected children’s items for the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan and its Operation School Bell® and Wee Help programs.

Premier Academy Director Michelle Schmitz led a holiday giving tree effort that gathered donations of children’s coats, tops, hats, gloves, books, diapers, blankets, infant sleepers and clothing. These items will be distributed to children in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, who are served through Assistance League’s philanthropic programs.

“Premier Academy is dedicated to providing families a warm, safe and nurturing environment for their children to learn and grow.  We hope our donations can help provide these same opportunities for others,” said Schmitz who is inspired by the work of Assistance League in the community.

Some donations will be distributed through Operation School Bell, a program that provides new, free school clothing and school supplies for elementary students. Students shop for their own selections with personal shoppers from Assistance League. With comfortable clothing and adequate supplies, students are better equipped to improve self-esteem and school attendance. Premier Academy collected warm coats, tops, hats, gloves and books that will be part of each child’s Operation School Bell shopping list.

Infants are served through Wee Help, Assistance League’s outreach program for mothers and their newborns. Families in need are given a Wee Help kit that includes a new receiving blanket, bottle, pacifier, bib, washcloth, diapers, sleepers, undershirts, baby book and a hand-knitted hat. The diapers and infant clothing collected by Premier Academy will benefit these families.

Assistance League President Marjorie DiLiddo said, “We appreciate Premier Academy and other generous donors who help us meet the basic needs of people in our community. We are proud to be stewards of this kindness and service to others.”
