Two elementary schools in East Detroit Public Schools have been selected to participate in Operation School Bell, sponsored by the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan.

Forest Park and Pleasantview elementary schools in Eastpointe were chosen to take part in the program, which provides free clothes, food and education opportunities for children from low-income households through community-based programs.

Operation School Bell’s focus is to improve students’ self confidence and school attendance. The program provides free new winter jackets, hats, gloves, pants, underwear, socks, hygiene kits, books, backpacks and duffle bags.

“Operation School Bell is an incredible opportunity for our students and their families,” said Kimberley Busuttil, principal of Forest Park Elementary School. “We are so very fortunate to have this kind of opportunity.”

Students will have the opportunity to shop for items from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at Forest Park gymnasium, 18361 Forest Avenue. Students from Pleasantview will be transported by bus to Forest Park for the event, said communication coordinator Francesca Lucido.

Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, serving Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties, is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization whose purpose is to clothe, feed, educate, and comfort children and adults through community-based programs, according to its website.
