Reno-Sparks – Receives Gift for Veterans Program

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) Some local programs serving veterans got a boost April 5, 2018 in the form of some big checks. The NV Energy Foundation announced the winners of their annual Power of Good Giveaway.

The big winner was the Veterans Guest House, which provides lodging for VA hospital patients and their families. They received a $10-thousand check. They had asked the public to vote on non-profit organizations which support active duty or military veterans.

“We ask our guests to pay $25 a night if they can,” said Noreen Leary, the CEO of the Veterans Guest House. “So it you divide 25 into there, there’s 400 guests nights of lodging that we can provide. A lot of our guests can’t afford it, so it will go toward our operational costs.”

Also receiving checks were the Reno-Sparks Assistance League, which provides bus passes for veterans receiving treatment at the hospital as well as helping vets get settled in apartments,.and the Truckee Meadows Community College Veterans Resource Center, which supports veteran students making their transition from military service to the academic world.
