Santa Clarita – Included in “Top Stories of the Year”

by Martha Michael

Thirteen-year-old Erica lined up with her father in front of Old Navy Tuesday night, waiting for her turn to enter the store and begin shopping with her $125 voucher. She would use all of the 45 minutes she was allowed, carefully choosing clothes for school that she otherwise would not have been able to purchase.

Because of the generosity of the Assistance League of Santa Clarita, hundreds of children and teens in the SCV get new clothes and shoes for school every fall during “Operation School Bell.” Each of the valley’s public schools receive vouchers from the non-profit group, and they award them to students from the neediest families so they can purchase clothing for school, hoping to create a more even economic playing field for the kids with their peers.
