Operation Scholar Support was started by Assistance League of Greater Wilmington in 2015 to provide scholarships for underserved students who attend Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College. The criteria for scholarships are maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.5, be a second-year student with documented financial need, be a resident of New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender counties, and preferably be a non-traditional student who is returning to school to obtain skills and employability.
Assistance League of Greater Wilmington provided two $1,000 scholarships to each community college in the fall of 2016 and another two $1,000 scholarships to each community college in the spring of 2017. For 2018, $3,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and another $2,500 was given to each community college for scholarships in May. For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, $5,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and a $15,000 check was presented to each college in May. For the 2019-2020 fiscal year, $6,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and an additional $10,000 was given to each college in May.
To date, each community college has received $45,500 from our local chapter.
Our chapter has reached the benefactor level of giving for Brunswick Community College and was inducted into the Order of the Cape Fear by Cape Fear Community College this past February. The Order of the Cape Fear is a recognition given to those whose cumulative giving to CFCC has exceeded $10,000.
