CAPE FEAR COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY COLLEGE

$45,000

GIVEN TO EACH COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Operation Scholar Support was started by Assistance League of Greater Wilmington in 2015 to provide scholarships for underserved students who attend Cape Fear Community College and Brunswick Community College.  The criteria for scholarships are maintaining a minimum grade point average of 2.5, be a second-year student with documented financial need, be a resident of New Hanover, Brunswick or Pender counties, and preferably be a non-traditional student who is returning to school to obtain skills and employability.

Assistance League of Greater Wilmington provided two $1,000 scholarships to each community college in the fall of 2016 and another two $1,000 scholarships to each community college in the spring of 2017.  For 2018, $3,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and another $2,500 was given to each community college for scholarships in May.  For the 2018-2019 fiscal year, $5,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and a $15,000 check was presented to each college in May.  For the 2019-2020 fiscal year, $6,000 in scholarship monies was provided to each community college in the fall and an additional $10,000 was given to each college in May.

To date, each community college has received $45,500 from our local chapter.

Our chapter has reached the benefactor level of giving for Brunswick Community College and was inducted into the Order of the Cape Fear by Cape Fear Community College this past February.  The Order of the Cape Fear is a recognition given to those whose cumulative giving to CFCC has exceeded $10,000.

$15,000 in scholarships was awarded to Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) in June 2019.

“This is amazing news! We really appreciate the incredible continuous support for our students especially in these difficult times. As you can imagine, the Coronavirus has severely impacted many students who were already struggling financially.  Support by you and the Assistance League are incredibly important to the success of our students.    Thank you again!”

“This is the best news in the world!  THANK YOU so much!  I was on a Zoom call and got visibly choked up when I read your message.  It makes my heart full to know we have the support of thoughtful community organizations like ALGW.  Your gift is so important to our students and will make a great impact!  The barriers to completing their education may be more daunting in the fall, but at least they know scholarship support is available.   Thank you so many times over!”
