Assistance League of Northern Virginia will again participate on December 1, 2020, in GIVING TUESDAY, the annual world-wide effort to encourage giving and celebrate generosity.  We are extremely grateful for all our supporters, as they have allowed us to continue helping those most in need during the pandemic.  We rely on our loyal donors and hope to encourage new supporters to sustain our philanthropic programs and possibly expand them.

Before the pandemic, our philanthropic programs had focused on feeding, clothing, and educating at-risk students at 11 elementary schools in our community.  Since schools closed in March, we have suspended most of our usual programs, including our Weekend Food for Kids program, by which we had provided more than 1800 bags of food each month to students at 6 elementary schools.  Instead, we now provide $20 grocery store gift cards each month to the families of the students we serve in Fairfax and Prince William Counties and the City of Alexandria, helping to feed the families of students who would have received the food bags.  We rely on school principals and counselors to devise strategies for distributing the cards to the families who need them most and have provided a total of 3,031 gift cards through October of this year ($60,620).

In addition, we provided nearly 1400 new books to students, so they had reading materials when schools and libraries were closed.  We are grateful for the contributions we’ve received from our supporters, especially during these tough economic times.  These contributions help us to continue our operations until we can resume our normal fund-raising efforts.
