Assistance League of Northern Virginia, as part of its participation in National’s Action! Week program, continued its dedication to literacy by purchasing books for every student at the largest school we serve, Yorkshire Elementary, Manassas, Virginia. The school has approximately 850 students, including Pre-K through Fifth Grade, and Assistance League provided a new book for every student to take home.  Our book donation project, titled Build A Child’s Library, took place on Thursday, February 28, at Yorkshire, beginning at 9:30am. The books provided were mostly in English and we also provided books that were in both Spanish and English.

Each student was able to select from a variety of grade-appropriate books that were selected by the Scholastic Literacy Partnership Program, with input from Yorkshire reading specialists regarding the reading skills and interests of students in each grade. Every book has a bookplate sticker identifying ALNV/Action! Week as the source of the book and is imprinted with a stamped notation: This Book Belongs To.”  As each student selected a book, ALNV volunteers were available to write the student’s name in the appropriate place. Volunteers from the Assistance League absolutely loved to see all the happy faces on the children as they received their very own book.
