Promoting Literacy

Assistance League of Bend distributed 228 new books to children in need at the Tower Theatre “Page to Screen” event on January 26. The Tower Theatre, in partnership with Assistance League of Bend and the Deschutes Public Library, holds these free family movie nights quarterly. Priority tickets are given to families from a different Title 1 elementary school at each event. In January, tickets to the screening of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets were offered first to families from Elk Meadow Elementary. Through Assistance League of Bend’s Operation School Bell Literacy Initiative, the excited children were able to select age-appropriate books based on their interest and grade level; K-2, 3-5 or 6-8. Encouraging children to read helps to improve their skills and promotes a lifelong habit.
