President’s Message
July 2025
Hello, my dear Friends,
I couldn’t be any happier or prouder to become ALNC President and to join you in the work we do for the children of Vista, Oceanside, and Carlsbad. I just got off the phone with Barbara Dunn, who was our ALNC President from 1999-2001. We thank Barbara for joining us at our June 26 Chapter meeting as we kick off our 25th Anniversary Celebration. Without Barbara and other women with a vision of creating an equitable academic environment for all children, no matter their parents’ income, the size of the house, or family background, many children would have difficulty reaching their academic potential. Giving every child a chance gives us all opportunity. I, for one, love our mission statement. It directly states that our goal is to provide a positive starting point for academic success.
Cheryl McGlocklin, Lory Sheldon, Chris Williams, Joanie Fehlen and I all attended the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce Health Expo at the El Corazon Aquatic Center on Wednesday, June 18. We met a young woman who is still in high school. She was there with her little brother and stopped by our table to chat. This teen had a very positive story to tell about her experience with ALNC. She said that she shopped at JC Penney with our Clothing for Children program when she was a little girl. The amazing thing is that she, only a little girl at the time, remembered who we were, that we were Assistance League! That says a lot about all of you and the kindness and respect with which you treat the children and families we serve.
I then remember the love and energy that fills the room at Shadowridge Golf Club when we honor our scholarship winners. Hopefully, children who receive our services such as the young woman who stopped by our table at the expo will be the scholarship winners of the future.
Our energy, vision, and love are a tradition we have inherited from our chapter founders. Thank you, Barbara Dunn. Thank you all!
It is a privilege and quite a responsibility to be your president.
With thanks,
Nancy Schaefer
