Portraits of the Past

Portraits of the Past Performers

Do you know some of the stories from San Jose’s past?  Recently, the Assistance League of San Jose was entertained and educated by History San Jose’s performance of “Portraits of the Past”.  As part of the League’s Fall Fundraiser more than 170 members and guests brunched on wonderful food from House of Bagels while learning about Juana Briones, one of the first female landowners in the Santa Clara Valley;  Anna Bascom who sewed the first schoolhouse out of blue denim, Mountain Charlie, a stagecoach driver and saloon owner who hid her true identity as a woman for over 15 years and many other courageous and determined women who didn’t let society slow them down.

The Assistance League of San Jose is able to meet the essential needs in our community not only because of funds raised through this luncheon and other activities, but also because of the unwavering support from foundations, businesses and leaders in San Jose.  Sponsors for this event are Assemblyman Evan Low, the Sereno Group, Better Homes and Gardens Ventura Barnett Properties, Dr. Alane Lee, James, Jacobsen Construction, Steinhoff Orthodontics, Coldwell Banker, Stuart Trust and Hair’s Inn.  Donations were matched by ALSJ member Lynda Fox.

Many thanks to these supporters who make sure the Assistance League of San Jose continues to serve thousands of children, families and seniors in the Santa Clara Valley.
